Story of ASTU
Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU) traces its origins to Nazareth Technical College (NTC), established in 1993. In 2003, it was upgraded to Nazareth College of Technical Teacher’s Education (NCTTE). The institution attained university status in 2006, becoming Adama University (AU) under the Ministry of Education (MoE). In 2011, its name was changed to Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU), shifting its oversight to the National Science and Technology Ministry in alignment with Ethiopia’s national goal of advancing science and technology for rapid economic growth.
Today, ASTU is one of only two
science and technology universities in Ethiopia. Its designation reflects its
strong alignment with national policies and priorities, consistently serving as
a benchmark in science and technology education. The university focuses
primarily on applied sciences and technological fields, offering programs
through five colleges:
- College of Applied Natural
Sciences
- College of Civil Engineering
& Architecture
- College of Electrical
Engineering & Computing
- College of Mechanical, Chemical
& Materials Engineering
- College of Humanities &
Social Sciences
ASTU follows a distinctive
philosophy of selection and concentration, admitting students through an online
examination process—an approach that has set a precedent for exit and
postgraduate entrance exams in other universities. The university is also rapidly
expanding its postgraduate programs.
Currently, ASTU has a student
population of approximately 8,021 and a faculty and staff of 603.
With its unique curriculum, extensive technology transfer initiatives, and
consultancy services, ASTU stands among the leading universities in Ethiopia.
